One forgettable election in Toronto, Oct. 14
Letter to Toronto Star, October 22, 2022
Rick Salutin identifies a number of important issues in the upcoming municipal election under a headline that suggests an absence of such issues.
This election is a vital one. Why?
First, because the disturbing pace of climate change means this term of council is likely the last one with a chance to make meaningful cuts to local emissions.
Second, without action on affordable housing, we will continue to see homelessness rise and other people give up on living in the city.
Third, the number of vacant seats offers an unusual opportunity for renewal through candidates who bring new energy, ideas and projects.
Last, without the implementation of available, practical solutions to road danger, we will see the preventable deaths, over the next four years, of 240 more of our fellow residents, and the serious injury of thousands of others.
